Whole Earth Guide

Provence Alpes Cote d'Azur is one of the most popular regions of France and with good reason. It consists of Departments of Alpes-de-Haute-Provence, Alpes-Maritimes, Bouches-du-Rhône, Hautes-Alpes, Var and Vaucluse.

Stretching from the Languedoc-Roussillon in the west to Italy in the east, from Monaco and the Mediterranean in the south to the Alps in the north there's a wealth of different scenery to see and things to do in this region.

If you're looking for Roman history, head inland for Avignon or Arles. For glitz and glamour, Cannes or St Tropez are the place to be though, of course, you shouldn't neglect Monaco.

Watersports include everything that you would expect of a region that runs alongside the Mediterranean with resorts aplenty.

Amongst the collection of Les Plus Beaux Villages in this region are Moustiers-Sainte-Marie, La Grave-la-Meije, Saint Véran, Coaraze, Gourdon, Sainte Agnès, Les Baux-de-Provence, Gassin, Seillans, Tourtour, Ansouis, Gordes, Lourmarin, Ménerbes, Roussillon, Séguret and Venasque.

The popularity of the region means many airport options including Avignon (AVG), Nice (NCE) and Toulon (TLN) but numerous others lie just outside the region offering a wealth of choices.

The rail network is extensive but don't forget that the highspeed trains radiate out from Paris so whilst the high speed TGV trains will get you from Paris in under six hours, it can take quite a while going from Avignon to Nice.

That duality is reflected in the tourist promotions and everywhere you'll find that the Roman history and Van Gogh get equal ...more

Avignon

Avignon is perhaps most famous for its bridge, the Pont d'Avignon but there's a lot more than that to see in the large walled city than that.

The city was used as the base for the Pope from 1309 to 1377 and courtesy of that there's effectively a mini version of the Vatican right in the centre of ...more

Our selection in Eure : Giverny - Monet's garden

Giverny is a small village that would have remained naught but a sleepy little village in Normandy had Claude Monet not been looking out of the window of a train in 1883 and fell in love with it.

Despite the fame that he brought to the village, it remains small and the attractions are those that ...more
