You'll know Strasbourg for it's European institutions and probably dismissed it as being only for them which is a shame because it has a lot to offer the tourist.
Yes, there are European institutions aplenty including the International Institute of Human Rights, the Central Commission for Navigation on the Rhine (the original European institution), the European Science Foundation, the European Parliament and many others but they're built in a medieval city. If you want to visit the European institutions most require an appointment.
However, alongside the modern institutions there's a magnificent medieval city. These include examples of gothic architecture such as the cathedral of Notre Dame and the Church of Saint Thomas, the renaissance Synagogue de la Paix and the many medieval buildings in Petite France (in the photo).
Unfortunately, the presence of so many European instututions means that discount airlines don't get a look-in at Strasbourg airport (SXB) and you need to look towards Zweibruken (ZQW), Saarbrueken (SCN) and Luxembourg (LUX) for cheaper flights.
The train is a useful means of reaching the city with a direct TGV service to Paris.
