Turin (Torino) - the shroud and the city

From WholeEarthGuide.com in Turin, Italy

In the minds of many people Turin (or Torino in Italian) is all about the shroud but there's much more to it than that of course.

The shroud itself is held within the Cathedral of Saint John the Baptist in the centre of the city. Unless you are very lucky, you'll probably have to make do with looking at the copy of the shroud on display at the entrance of the cathedral as the shroud itself is not normally on display. It's held in a covered and sealed box at the rear of the cathedral which you can view outside the times for church services.

Although it's quite a large city it's fairly easy to get into the central area and there's lots of parking available even during the Friday market that's held in the centre. As elsewhere, driving in Italian cities can often be hair-raising.

If you're into mysticism you'll know that Turin is one of the apexes of both the black and white magic triangles. The centre white magic is in Piazzo Castello just beside the cathedral and is one of the larger city squares. For the black magic centre, head down Via Garabaldi to the much smaller Piazzo Statuto where the gates to Hell are supposedly underneath the sculpture of tortured figures.

The central area is full of charming piazzas and upmarket boutiques making it a very pleasant city to visit. However, as it is a large industrial city don't forget that the chaotic nature of Italian driving can mean that it can take anything up to two hours to get out of the city at peak times.

The nearest airport is Turin (TRN) is served by Ryanair, EasyJet and British Airways among others.

The city is well connected to the Italian train network.
