2008 ELAINE TURNBULL - A NEW ARTIST AT THE GALLERY
East Yorkshire artist Elaine Turnbull will be showing at the gallery for the first time this December. Gallery owner Ann Petherick saw Elaine’s work at an open exhibition in Yorkshire and was attracted to her vibrant colours and jaunty style.
Elaine is a native of the north-east and has recently moved back to Yorkshire after a spell in Dorset. She was trained as a textile artist and also works in collage, an influence which is apparent in her painting. Much of her work is still life but with a quirky and original feel, such as in ‘Coffee pot and early daffodils’. However, the influence of always living near the coast comes across in many of her images, such as ‘Harbourside’, and her work seems particularly appropriate to a seafaring area such as the Yorkshire coast Kentmere House

2008 Spotlight on Slipware - This display of historic and contemporary slipware - decorated earthenware pottery - is the result of a new initiative between York Museums Trust and Manchester Metropolitan University.
Slip is a mixture of water and clay which is used by potters to decorate earthenware in a wide range of methods, including piping it on like icing, combing through wet slip to give a feathered pattern or simply painting it on.
Slipware is England's oldest type of pottery and is a tradition that has thrived since the middle ages and contemporary potters are still interested in exploring slipware techniques.
Our display will show historic slipware from our collection, including a piece by Thomas Toft and other pieces from Yorkshire potteries, alongside work by two contemporary potters, Mike Eden, based in Cumbria, and Paul Young, from Leicestershire York Art

2008 The Ebor Singers present "Wassail Dinner"
Festive music, food and drink, and good company - what better way to celebrate the end of Christmas?!
For the third consecutive year, The Ebor Singers will be celebrating the end of the Christmas season with a Wassail Dinner, on Saturday 12 January 2008 in the Merchant Taylors Hall, Aldwark. Guests will be greeted with a warm cup of wassail, before a three-course meal, and an evening of musical entertainment, and not forgetting the Ebor Singers Wassail Play!
Wassail is a hot, spiced punch often associated with winter celebrations of northern Europe, usually those connected with holidays such as Christmas, New Year and Twelfth Night. The term itself is a contraction of the Old English toast wæs þu hæl , or "be thou hale!" (i.e., "be in good health"). Wassail customs included rituals in apple orchards to ensure a good apple harvest the following year, and wassailing, when groups of people in costume go from door to door bearing wassail or sometimes begging for it while singing and revelling 7.30 pm

What hope for us remains? - Restoration Odes and Elegies by Blow and Purcell
John Blow’s exquisite Ode on the Death of Mr Henry Purcell is rarely heard, possibly because of the demanding nature of the vocal writing, but the exceptional beauty of his homage to Purcell shows just how fine a composer Blow was, and how much he had been influenced by his pupil Purcell. Purcell’s elegies on the deaths of Queen Mary, Matthew Locke and John Playford, and songs from Dioclesian and The Fairy Queen also feature in the programme. The Importance of Remembering the Holocaust The York St John University lecture to mark Holocaust Memorial Day, given by Dr Eva Schloss, Auschwitz survivor and Trustee of the Anne Frank Educational Trust UK.
In this lecture Dr Schloss will address why after 52 years is it still so important to talk about the Holocaust and how we must learn from the past. She will discuss the background to events at the time of the Holocaust, including Germany’s and Austria’s defeat in World War One, the economic depression and mass unemployment, and the fear of communism at that time. Dr Schloss will also focus on how those world events had particularly strong repercussions in Austria, where she and her family lived, and relate it to her own experiences. She will also talk about her return visit to Auschwitz in January 1995, the concentration camp from which she was liberated by the Russian Army 50 years before.
Eva Schloss came to London in 1951 and for many years ran an antiques shop in Edgware. Since 1985, Dr Schloss has become increasingly active in Holocaust education by speaking at public meetings and schools. She also became a member of the Anne Frank Educational Trust UK. Her book Eva’s Story about her experiences during and after the Second World War was published in 1988 which has sold more than 150,000 copies and been translated into seven languages. She has co-operated with playwright James Still in the production of the educational play And Then They Came For Me – Remembering the World of Anne Frank dealing with the experiences of four teenagers in the Holocaust, which has been widely performed. Dr Schloss wrote her second book The Promise, together with Michigan Educationalist Barbara Powers in 2006. She is married to Zvi Schloss and they have three daughters and five grandchildren.
This lecture is the first annual ‘York St John University Lecture’, which marks the occasion of York’s oldest Higher Education Institution becoming a University in 2006.

2008 York St John University's Multimedia Performance - 'And Then They Came For Me – Remembering the World of Anne Frank'. This performance is a unique theatrical experience: a multimedia play that combines videotaped interviews with Holocaust survivors Ed Silverberg and Eva Schloss with live actors, recreating scenes from their lives during World War II. Ed was Anne Frank's first boyfriend, and she wrote about him in the beginning of her now-famous diary. Eva Schloss was the same age as Anne Frank and lived in the same apartment building in Amsterdam. Her family went into hiding the same day as the Frank family, and like the Frank family, they were betrayed.
Part oral history, part dramatic action, part direct address, part remembrance, the ensemble-driven And Then They Came for Me breaks new ground and has been acclaimed by audiences and critics in world-wide productions

2008 House Concert - Rose Polenzani & Sharon Lewis
Rose Polenzani's newest record "August" has been inspiring the poetic sensibilities of the world's critics. "Evocative stories that one wants to curl up with, like a cherished book" says Time Out New York. "Like armchair travel through a newly-carved glacial valley" says UK critic Alan Pedder. A review of her November, 2005 residency at Lizard Lounge read: "You don't just listen to Rose, she happens to you." If all the hype is true, it's not as if she hasn't earned it. Rose made her debut at the 1998 Newport and Lilith Fair Festivals, and has been writing and touring ever since. She has released five albums to date; two on indie label Daemon Records, two on her own, and one on Rykodisk, as a member of Voices on the Verge, alongside Jess Klein, Erin McKeown, and Beth Amsel. Originally from Chicago, she currently lives in Somerville, MA.
